You've
heard of Gandhi, right?
There's a reason we remember him and talk about him and
want kids to learn about him in school. He was brave. He saw something
bad going on all around him, and while most people were too scared or
too lazy to fix it, he decided to do something.
Same with Mother Theresa.
She saw a whole load of people, hungry, poor, uncared for, and she thought
that it wasn't fair that some people have so much and some so little.
She felt sorry for the poor. Everyone feels sorry for the poor and the
sick, but Mother Theresa decided to do more than feel sorry, she took
care of them. Then there's Nelson Mandela, who like Gandhi, decided
he was going to change things that he knew were bad without being angry,
and violent. He was going to be patient and peaceful and make people
see where they were going wrong. You know of all these people, you know
they did some very good things and that they were good -it's all in
the text books at school. But what's not in the text books is that you're
pretty great too.
Yup,
you!
You
can totally change the things around you that you don't like, that you
think are unfair or just plain wrong. You can show the bully in class
that all his bossiness is a big pain, and that if he learnt how to be
nicer people would like him a lot. You can clear up the litter in your
apartment complex and make it look cool. You can help a little kid with
his homework. You can help your Mom relax when she gets home from work,
all grumpy and tired. You can do a lot of things that can make your
world nicer, cleaner, more fun.
We
always think we can't do much on our own. But when you feel like that
just remember, Gandhi didn't think that way. He did what he had to do.
You can join me if you like, at Hippocampus, and we can work on the
things that we think we can help fix. I know there are loads of things
I would like help out with and I could use some extra hands.
